Culture Through Smoke

Culture Through Smoke

The essence of smoke is mystical and evocative and is a fundamental human symbol that crosses all boundaries.

The use of Oud oils, wood chips and bakhoors is ancient beyond memorial
since the time of the Sanskrit, Torah, Gospel and the Muslim scriptures.
Bakhoor is reknowned to calm the body and mind, invoking a feeling of harmony and vigour.

"Bukhoor” is the Arabic name given to scented bricks or a blend of natural traditional ingredients, mainly woodchips (Oud, Agarwood or Aloeswood) soaked in fragrant oils and mixed with other natural ingredients (Resin, Musk, Ambergris, Sandalwood , flower oils and others). These scented chips/bricks are burned in charcoal burners to perfume the house and clothing with the rich and fragrant smoke. This is used specifically on special occasions like weddings or generally just to perfume the house and to boost positive energy. It is traditional in many Arab countries to pass Bukhoor among guests as a gesture of hospitality.

The Bukhoor is usually burned in a traditional incense burner (also known as Mabkhara) using charcoal of wood or manufactured charcoal discs and briquettes.

Mastery of bakhoor making may take years and sometimes the skills are brought down for one generation to the next.

Bakhoor is used throughout the year, however it becomes more important on holidays such as Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, as well as on occasions like weddings, where perfumes are presented with incense to the guests who imbibe in the fragrant atmosphere. It is also common for many women who apply perfume on themselves and their clothing, to then apply Bakhoor to 'fix' the fragrance in place and to add a special character. It is also used for hair.

Oo La Lab is proud to announce that we have added a Bukhoor workshop to our retail and events space, Oo La Lab, based in the heart of Alserkal Avenue, Al Quoz.

To know a culture is to observe, to immerse and to embrace it. With body, heart and mind.
