Chypre (Cy)
Chypre (Cy)
About this Note
Pronounced sheep-ra, is the name of a family (or concept) of perfumes that are characterised by an accord composed of citrus top notes (bergamot), and a mossy-animalic set of base notes derived chiefly from oakmoss. These days many oakmoss and tree moss varieties have been banned or greatly restricted in their usage due to possible allergens, making modern Chypres less potent than their namesake predecessors.
Chypre was a fragrance initially launched by Coty in the early 1900s and eventuated into its own family. The name is French for the Greek island Cyprus.
